The On/ Off Perforator is a mid-BHA component that allows the operator to run any BHA components below into the wellbore, while circulating without restriction down the tool string. This is primarily advantageous to combine a (mill) motor confirmation run with a perforating run to eliminate a trip to surface for tool swapping, reducing valuable rig time and potential frac standby.
The perforator is ball activated and can perform multiple abrasive cuts with several phasing options available by isolating flow from the motor and extended reach tools below the perforator. When the operator chooses to commence perforating operations, a drop ball is deployed to the BHA, redirecting flow to the perforator nozzles, where a slurry can be placed to abrasively cut casing. During this operation all fluid flow is stopped below the perforator. Once the abrasive perforating operation is completed, a second drop ball can be deployed to the BHA, restoring the fluid flow path through the tool string below.
